Located on the heart, thymus is an organ bilobulado and its main function is to develop lymphocytes.
Lymph carries white blood cells to this body, where they multiply and become special cells to fight infections. Although the role of the thymus is not known in their entirety, is known to have a very important role in the development of immunity to various diseases.
Many researchers believe that the thymus produces lymphocytes original formed in the body before birth and continued after. The lymphocytes from the thymus travel to the lymph nodes and spleen through the bloodstream.
It was also the thymus cree that synthesizes a hormone essential for immunity. This hormone known as the thymus humoral factor (THF), must be present for a short time after the birth of the child to develop immunity minimum necessary. Investigators believe that the hormone produced by the thymus acts on lymphocytes, making the B lymphocytes become plasma cells, which are producing antibodies immunities.
After puberty, the thymus begins to diminish in size. Its main function seems to grow during the early stages of their lives in the development of immunity.
